Have you wanted to try making your own lock picks? Perhaps you have a concept for what will be the next great rake. Maybe you need a specific shape to tackle one lock in particular. This is how we develop new lock picks in the shop here.
How to Create your Own DIY Picks
By using one of our DIY lock pick blanks, you will save yourself a lot of time filing and finishing the handle and shaft. The picks have been cut in such a way that the ends have extra meat on them for you to file into your own specialized lock pick. These come in either hook or rake versions, really letting you focus on the work tip. Simply use a sharpie marker to outline the material you wish to remove. Then using a hand file slowly remove material. You can even test as you work to get the perfect fit. It’s best to take the process slowly…… it’s easy to remove material, putting it back not so much. Pippen files are great for this type of work and can get you some great shapes. Another tip for developing rakes is to mark the peaks and valleys from the key onto your DIY pick so that when you shape it you are getting a profile that will be similar to the action and spacing of the key.
Choosing Sparrows’ DIY Lock Picks
The DIY lock pick blanks are made from the same steel as our regular line of lock picks and tumbled smooth. When shaping, it’s best to use hand tools over grinding wheels like dremels. This will give you a more accurate cut and it also does not heat up the steel.
