BUMP KEY SETS

Bump keys are fantastic. Since they became public knowledge through Barry Wels in 2005 they have become hugely popular for two reasons: 1. They work 2. They are easy to use. Vibration has always been a weak spot for lock security and many different tools exploit this weakness. The very best being bump keys. Other tools like electric picks or snap guns attack the lock through vibration, randomly waiting for the internal pins to bounce and eventually all line up at the sheer line allowing the lock to open. Bump keys put more precision into the attack. By having a key cut to the specific lock you wish to open, you are able to take the random out of the attack.

How do Bump Keys Work?

Bump keys are cut with small ramps that are spaced at the same distance as the pins inside the lock. When put into the lock and given a sharp tap, these ramps quickly hit all the bottom pins at the same time. These bottom pins then hit the top pins and make them jump. This jump creates a gap at the sheer line allowing the lock to open. Just like lock picking, bumping is a skill but the skill is learning the timing. Once learned bumping locks open is VERY fast

Are Bump Keys Legal?

Because bump keys are so different from lock picks they are often classified as different tools from a legal perspective. Do your own research, but as an example it’s illegal to own or carry lock picks or Bump keys in the following states:

Mississippi
Nevada
Ohio
Virginia

So take that as a warning: You can’t just claim to be carrying a set of keys.
It is considered “prima facie evidence” to possess Bump keys in these states. Basically you are guilty and have to prove your innocence.

Why would you need a bump key over a lock pick?

Bump keys are very quick but do have one large downside. The key has to match the lock you plan to open. If it's a Schlage lock and you have a Yale bump key you are out of luck. This is where lock picks and Snap guns have a huge advantage. Lock picks and snap guns can be used universally and are not as specific as bump keys are to opening a lock.

Can Bump Keys open Deadbolts?

It’s often asked if bump keys will work on dead bolt locks and the answer is Yes. A dead bolt is a mechanical feature of a lock that is activated after a lock has been unlocked. Dead bolts have nothing to do with the actual lock itself. If the bump key matches the lock it can be bumped open. Having a deadbolt does not add any protection against a bump key attack.
